Gambling should be a legitimate form of entertainment.
We should be free to choose how to spend and enjoy our own money.

Gambling serves as an harmless outlet for the need of some to take risks.

Some other forms of gambling that are regarded as more acceptable have generally poorer odds. For example Insurance Companies take your wager knowing the inferior odds they are offering. Damaging addiction is not limited to gambling. For example addictive shoppers, of which there are many, have destroyed families and brought financial ruin. Addiction to sugar is widespread especially in the USA and has very serious health risks. Not to mention the countless other forms of addiction or abuse. Risk taking in other activities is often far more dangerous than sitting at a casino table or a computer terminal. And gambling even offers the chance of substantial financial gains to some.

We believe there is little case for treating gambling differently to other voluntary activities and there is every reason for people to be left alone to their own pursuits. Internet gambling does provide easier access than land-based casinos. This obviously makes it easier for problem gamblers to participate. But that is not a valid reason to prevent all others from taking advantage of this novel and competitive form of gambling.
And easier access is a real benefit to house-bound gamblers.

Indeed, online casinos are far more easily able to detect and restrain such problem gamblers. Many online casinos and sportsbooks are already co-operating with so-called Negative Databases. Problem and dishonest gamblers are marginalized by these privately owned self-regulated operations.

I totally and completely agree with you Graeme, I miss not being able to play my favorite Microgaming games. Wish they would legalize it here in uSA. Thank you for post.

Here in Canada, gambling is definitely frowned upon in society as a whole. I market the GamblingCity cashback scheme, but I find myself censoring myself. I haven't even been able to promote online gambling to my boss/supervisor because we both work for the government in a fairly high/reputable capacity. Yet I know that they gamble quite a bit already in land based casinos. If we were good buddies, I could express myself, but otherwise cannot diverge from mainstream accepted behaviour.

On the topic of "how harmless it is", I think this depends on the discipline of the one whose playing, but regardless of how disciplined one is, the society I live in will frown on anyone who gambles.

I consider my owns personal views to lay right in the middle.

When I'm marketing online gambling, I'll be completely supportive of it. On the other hand, I don't think I would encourage anyone I was truly close with to take it up. Of course it depends on who the person is, but generally, I feel like if my sister/brother/mother asked me if I thought they should "give it a try", I'd probably go 180 and say "don't do it"! Again, it would depend on who asked me, but my general feeling is that I would discourage them from trying it.
