Yes, I fully admit to playing on line. It is one heck of a lot more convenient as the closest brick and mortar casino is several thousand kilometers from where I live.

That said, given my choice, I would much rather be in a brick and mortar casino, especially in Vegas, than playing on line.

Why? For a start, it's always more pleasurable to play with a group of other people, even if they are strangers, than it is alone. This, of course, is more true of table games than it is of slots, but even there the atmosphere of a casino adds a lot to the fun. (Moreover, having beautiful women offering to bring me free drinks is an extra added bonus.)

Another big advantage at a brick and mortar casino is that I don't have to spend hours poring through their T&Cs in order to be certain that I don't make some small mistake that would invalidate all of my winnings (but not my losses).

Take a look at some of the reports on Gambling Grumbles -- like this linked one. This woman had 11,000 GBP confiscated because she made one bet on game which was banned by the bonus T&Cs -- and actually lost that bet.

If I sit down at a blackjack table which has a $500 maximum and try to bet $5000 it is the dealer's responsibility to refuse the bet. If he doesn't, and I win, I will collect the full $5000. If I have a run of big wins on a particular slot machine, nobody at a brick and mortar casino is going to tell me that the machine was having technical problems and my winnings are invalid.

Okay -- that is how I see things. How about you?

I agree with your assessment across the board Cardman! For my part, I can add that their is always an almost
crackling air of excitement surrounding a trip to the casino that I don't quite get online.

On the other side of the coin, it is awful nice to be able to gamble in my jammies!

I find it easier to control my gambling if I'm online.
When I'm winning, I can click a little cross and I'm logged out.

At a terrestrial casino, I travel hundreds of miles and book a room for a few nights.
If I'm winning, I say to myself I've travelled so far and I'm booked for more days.
So I play on. And generally lose.

But nothing can compare to the excitement and sounds of the real casino.

When I travel, I set a loss limit of $200 per day. In fact, the moment that I walk into the casino I consider that $200 as lost and if I end the day having lost $75 I feel like I have won $125.

While I have never lost even a penny more than my budgeted amount, I do allow it to be cumulative. If I am going to spend 7 days in Vegas, I allow myself to lose $1400. If I lose that $75 the first day, I start the second day with a $325 budget. If I win $100 that first day, I have $500 I can lose on the second day.

Losing $1400 in a week (and I have never actually lost that much) may sound like a lot of money, but in reality it is not. I have enough of a record at some Vegas hotels that I can get my room comped for the entire stay. (Remember, a casino does not care how much you win or lose -- it judges you on how much you bet and at what games.)

If I were to spend a week in New York City instead of Vegas, I would wind up spending a lot more than $200 per night just for the room and not get one anywhere as nice as what I get for free in Vegas.

Very interesting thread and great posts Cardman. Cheers.

I'm a skill games (mostly backgammon) player and for me it had to be online. Nowhere you can have a 24/7 game available except online.
OK, if you are a poker player then maybe a B&M casino may be a better choice in terms of finding drunk people playing at your table...
But if you are a (mass) multi table player -- I know players playing 12-20 tables at once -- then again, it must be done online.

If you are a card counter, then it must be done in a B&M where you have a few decks and decent rules, or know a flashy dealer...
So I'd say it comes down to this: for entertainment + counting + comps = B&M action ; for 24/7 skill games + commodity = Online action

I agree that your general money safety is with the B&M casinos because there the money are 100% in your hands. Not the same online.

Being mostly a slots player with a dash of roulette thrown in for flavor, I enjoy slots online and at land based casinos.
The choice I prefer will always be slots at a land based casino and here's why :)

When I was 12 my Grandma and Grandpa took me to Vegas with them so that I could sit in with my Great Uncle's band at the Union Plaza Hotel.
They'd always gone on trips to Las Vegas since I could remember, but this time I got to go, and I was psyched. I'm pretty sure I was more excited about the casino than the gig.

To get to the showroom you had to walk through the casino. I was absolutely fascinated by the slots. The spinning reels, the cool designs, the crazy lights, the loud bells and whistles, all of it. The energy, the buzz, it was almost overwhelming, but I was caught up in it, hook line and sinker.

After the first show Grandma and Grandpa went to dinner with friends and I was to go back to the room and order room service.
Of course I asked for a few bucks mentioning something about hitting the gift shop on my way to the room, which of course they gave me.
I had no intention of going anywhere near the gift shop and instead went right to the cashier to trade my cash for coins, once they were out of sight.

I hit the first quarter slot I could find, and was about 10 pulls in when a voice from behind me directed my attention away from the spinning reels.
"Come on kid, you know this ain't gonna happen for you. I'm gonna walk away and when I turn around seeing you is not gonna happen for me."
I spun around so fast but all I saw was a dark haired man in a grey suit walking away. Needless to say I beat feet back to the hotel room.

After the second show I again was going to head right to my room, so my Grandparents thought but I again had another plan in mind. Back in those days a man would sit up on a high chair and watch over the slot area, so my plan was to avoid this man in the high chair at all costs and find a slot hidden way off somewhere where they'd never see me. To get over to that area though I had to pass the man in the chair! I made no eye contact, pretending that he simply was not there. As I passed him a voice says "Really kid? You gotta be kiddin' me. I know I'm not seeing you again, I just know it." Foiled again! Completely defeated I returned to the hotel room and begrudgingly order a hamburger plotting my course for the next day which was the last show and our last day in Vegas.

The 3rd and final night after the show we all headed back to the hotel and Grandma and Grandpa stayed until they thought I was asleep then went out to do a little gambling of their own. After waiting long enough to make sure they'd be in the down at casino I was up and out, on a mission to play the 25 cent slots. I get off the elevator, successfully avoid the man in the spectator chair and make may way through a maze of slots being sure to not run into my Grandma or the "Man in Grey" - I found the PERFECT one, it had diamonds as the jackpot symbols, I though well this must be it, what girl does not love diamonds? No sooner had I sat down, not even long enough to fetch the coins out of my jeans pocket, I heard a voice from behind me. "Kid, you got a lotta nerve, I like that, you got 5 minutes. You and me? We never had this conversation." By the time I turned around again all I saw was the dark haired man in the grey suit walking away.

I won $50 and ever since then gambling on the slots at the casino reminds me of my Grandparents and my 1st adventure in gambling :D

Cheers,
Sky

I have to agree with kattboots and Pevangel. I would much rather play from the comfort of my home in my comfy clothes. If I were a drinker I would rather be at home as well rather than be stuck losing my money at a landbase lol. I actually went to a land based casino last July and had a miserable time and didn't win a nickle. Boo hoo!

I have to vote for both in regards of how much I like to play online Poker and Live tournaments.

But the difference is that online I mostly play cash while Live I play mostly tournaments. Live cash is to slow for me and I usually end up playing out of my bankroll when I actually see the people at the table Shhh
