Is using a VPN to access region-blocked streaming sites safe?

I’ve been jumping through hoops trying to watch a couple of shows that aren’t available in my country, and everyone keeps telling me to “just use a VPN.” Thing is, I’m kinda paranoid about getting busted or accidentally downloading malware or something sketchy. I’m not trying to pirate anything, just access stuff I’m already paying for. Some friends say it’s totally fine, others act like I’m about to invite the FBI into my living room. Can anyone break down how safe this really is and what I should watch out for?

I'm not a high roller or a professional; I just play for fun and the adrenaline rush. I've tried many sites, but I often encountered support responses that were formulaic or took too long.
