Poker Terms Dictionary - an in-depth look at some of the common terms in Poker. ACTIONThe term ACTION is often used to describe whose's turn it is next. And anything done on the poker table can also be referred to as ACTION. IE: Placing a bet, folding cards, raising, and checking.
ALL-INA player has bet all of their money or chips on the outcome of that particular hand he is currently playing.
ANTEA predetermined amount posted before the start of a hand.
BETPlacing a bet which contributes to a pot which can be won or split at the end of that particular game played.
BIG BLINDA forced bet added by a player, 2 places left of the dealer button.
BLINDA forced bet made before any cards are dealt.
BOARDUsed in reference to the community cards dealt and face up on the table.
BURNCARDAfter each player has received their cards (at the beginning of a new game), the top card is ‘burned’ and tossed into the discard pile face down.
BUTTONShort for ‘Dealer Button’ which moves in a clockwise direction after each game.
BUY-INThe minimum amount of money a player must needs to enter any given game.
CHECKTo pass on betting. If there's no action (bet) to you, there's nothing to call. If you don't want to bet, you can just "check."
COMMUNITY CARDSCards dealt face-up in the center of the table that are shared by all players in the particular hand / game.
CUTTo divide the deck into sections in such a manner as to change the order of the cards.
FIXED LIMITA Pre-set bet amount.
FLOPThree community cards that are turned simultaneously after the first round of betting is done.
FOLDTo discard your cards and end your involvement with the current hand / game.
HEADS-UPOnly two players involved in the action.
SHUFFLEMixing and shuffling the deck of cards.
SMALL BLINDHalf of the big blind, a forced bet made by the player one seat to the left of the dealer.
TURNCARDThe fourth card dealt in Texas and Omaha Hold'em.
RIVERThe fifth card dealt in Texas and Omaha Hold'em.
