I very rarely play video poker but am considering changing that. Under what circumstances is best to try to double a win and when is it smarter to keep the smaller win?

What a great question Cardman... I have been working on my Video Poker game for the last year or so and would really like to see some opinions on this. It is not something I ever thought to ask.

I do have my opinions about it... Personally, I don't have much luck with the double-up feature and thus don't care to do it a lot. However, when I do bet it I never bet it with anything but an even money win. If I already have made a profit on the hand, I don't want to throw it away.

I consider the double-up feature to be an entirely different game than the video poker game I am playing. Therefore, when or if I do place a bet on it, it has nothing to do with my poker game, thus it is not a part of my strategy to win at video poker.

If you play in a video poker tournament and you have to beat a certain score, then bet max everytime and double on everything all the way up until your score reaches the first place. And make sure you start playing in the last hours of the tournament so your target be accurate.

If you are talking about playing video poker for comps, make sure you find a full pay Jacks or Better, make sure you have no errors in your holding cards strategy check "Video Poker for Winners" by Bob Dancer which is a great tool for this purpose, and have a proper bankroll.

Doubling up in a regular game play will not give you any extra advantage, all it does is to increase variance and require you a larger bankroll.
