It's a funny story to re-tell. I can still see the casino floor so clearly and of course the 'Man in Grey'
What are some of your funny gambling anecdotes?

When I was 12 my Grandma and Grandpa took me to Vegas with them so that I could sit in with my Great Uncle's band at the Union Plaza Hotel.
They'd always gone on trips to Las Vegas since I could remember, but this time I got to go, and I was psyched. I'm pretty sure I was more excited about the casino than the gig.

To get to the showroom you had to walk through the casino. I was absolutely fascinated by the slots. The spinning reels, the cool designs, the crazy lights, the loud bells and whistles, all of it. The energy, the buzz, it was almost overwhelming, but I was caught up in it, hook line and sinker.

After the first show Grandma and Grandpa went to dinner with friends and I was to go back to the room and order room service.
Of course I asked for a few bucks mentioning something about hitting the gift shop on my way to the room, which of course they gave me.
I had no intention of going anywhere near the gift shop and instead went right to the cashier to trade my cash for coins, once they were out of sight.

I hit the first quarter slot I could find, and was about 10 pulls in when a voice from behind me directed my attention away from the spinning reels.
"Come on kid, you know this ain't gonna happen for you. I'm gonna walk away and when I turn around seeing you is not gonna happen for me."
I spun around so fast but all I saw was a dark haired man in a grey suit walking away. Needless to say I beat feet back to the hotel room.

After the second show I again was going to head right to my room, so my Grandparents thought but I again had another plan in mind. Back in those days a man would sit up on a high chair and watch over the slot area, so my plan was to avoid this man in the high chair at all costs and find a slot hidden way off somewhere where they'd never see me. To get over to that area though I had to pass the man in the chair! I made no eye contact, pretending that he simply was not there. As I passed him a voice says "Really kid? You gotta be kiddin' me. I know I'm not seeing you again, I just know it." Foiled again! Completely defeated I returned to the hotel room and begrudgingly order a hamburger plotting my course for the next day which was the last show and our last day in Vegas.

The 3rd and final night after the show we all headed back to the hotel and Grandma and Grandpa stayed until they thought I was asleep then went out to do a little gambling of their own. After waiting long enough to make sure they'd be in the down at casino I was up and out, on a mission to play the 25 cent slots. I get off the elevator, successfully avoid the man in the spectator chair and make may way through a maze of slots being sure to not run into my Grandma or the "Man in Grey" - I found the PERFECT one, it had diamonds as the jackpot symbols, I though well this must be it, what girl does not love diamonds? No sooner had I sat down, not even long enough to fetch the coins out of my jeans pocket, I heard a voice from behind me. "Kid, you got a lotta nerve, I like that, you got 5 minutes. You and me? We never had this conversation." By the time I turned around again all I saw was the dark haired man in the grey suit walking away.

I won $50 and ever since then gambling on the slots at the casino reminds me of my Grandparents and my 1st adventure in gambling :D

Cheers,
Sky

My first gambling experience? Unquestionably it was playing for marbles in the neighborhood. Then I stepped up to flipping for baseball cards.

As far as playing for money is concerned, it was a slot machine on an American Army base in Europe. I played a .25 cent machine three times and hit a jackpot with my third quarter -- collecting $45. This was back in the days when privates were paid $78 per month so it seemed like a fortune to me.

I was hooked for life!

In my teens I visited a speakeasy in Hillbrow, Johannesburg.
There Fan-Tan, or Chinese Beans, attracted many punters and mounds of cash.

All gambling was illegal so the "casino" relied on an intricate system of positioning guards on street corners who would whistle in relays when police were approaching. Sound travels faster than boots, so by the time the police arrived, the Fan-Tan table was turned over and converted into a pool table.

Fan-Tan is played by counting off a pile of beans in fours. The remainder (0,1,2 or 3) determines the winners who get paid out of the pot. The house would take a significant cut of the pot because prohibition raised the costs.

I have never recaptured the exhilaration of playing in that teeming, sweaty little room.

My first gambling experience was a blast.
Back in 92 my Sister and I went to Atlantic City to visit our Mom and Stepdad. They only lived 30 minutes form Atlantic City. We planned a day to go there for some gambling fun. As we got to the City I remember seeing all the casinos lined up on the Boardwalk. I was so excited as I had never been to Atlantic City before let alone a real casino. We parked the car and got out, I could hear the machines from the parking deck my excitement was building I could smell the Ocean water. We got to the Trump casino and I could not believe how beautiful it was. Chandeliers were hanging from the ceiling everywhere and the slots were poppin. We went on down the boardwalk and went into another casino where my Stepdad began playing the Poker machines and us Lady's headed to the slots. My Stepdad came running to us after a while screaming he had won $1,000. He gave us each a $100 and took us to a very nice Steakhouse that was in the casino. We played in the casinos until the wee hours of the morning before we headed back to their place. We all slept for a little while and headed back there for the 4th of July for more fun. That was one of the best times of my life, we had so much fun and my Sister hit $500 on her last $5 she put into the slot machine. I didn't win a large amount but I sure had fun playing off of their charity lol

My son, Craig, first visited a casino with me.
I have never placed much store on artificial age restrictions.
So, at 15 or so, dressed in his suit, unshaven and carrying my brief case, he marched confidently behind me into the casino.

We won that night. So he had to wait for another time for aversion therapy.

I don't remember when was my first time when I have gambled for money, or for a stake for that matter.
But I am pretty sure it was Backgammon. I also don't remember if I won or if I lost when I first gambled.

I don't rightly know or remember the first time I gambled. At our house growing up, we learned poker as soon as we were knee high to a grasshopper. There was no family gathering or party that did not include an ongoing poker game.

In retrospect, I think my mother had a gambling problem. If we did not have any money saved from our allowance, my mom would give us $2 each to buy-in, then she would merrily beat us and take her money back one hand at a time until her gambling fever passed for a while. To my mom's last days, we all could tell she was still ok and perking along as long as she could still get to Indian Bingo or travel to a casino.

Later when we were old enough to go to Nevada and gamble, any and every trip with my mom was to a casino. And that opens up a whole lot of stories about gambling with mom, but I'll save them for another day.
