Three casino hotels are going out of business in Atlantic City this weekend: Showboat, Revel, and Trump Towers.

Atlantic City, which hoped to rival Vegas, is beset by a host of problems. To start with, most of the city is a slum, leaving only the boardwalk where visitors feel safe to walk around.

Next on the list is transportation. It is an hour drive from the closest big city (Philadelphia) and over two hours from the next large one (New York).
To make it worse, it has a tiny airport which is only served by two airlines and between them they have non-stop flights to only 10 cities.

Perhaps worst of all (for the casinos) is that while Atlantic City may have had a monopoly on East Coast gambling when it first legalized it, that is no longer the case. Many neighboring cities (including Philadelphia and New York) now have casinos of their own, meaning that day-trippers aren't bothering to head to AC.

Atlantic City may have thought that it was going to be a new Vegas but it looks more probable that it will be a new Pompeii.

I agree with you about Atlantic City. The only place that is half way decent is the Boardwalk , a place that you can feel somewhat comfortable. When I was there there were vagrants all over the place hitting you up for money all the time. The downside is all of those people losing their jobs, it is really sad.
