I’ll try to keep this as short as possible, but I really need help ending a dispute. I play poker with a group of friends once a week. This last week after many hands of poker (and even more rounds of drinks) two of my friends found themselves in an “all-in” situation. The dealer (foolishly and drunkenly) declared my friend Bill the winner. Bill grabbed the chips, but then my other friend noticed that he had actually won the hand. The cards had all been gathered, but the next hand had not yet begun. So at what point does a hand actually finish? Once the cards hit the “muck” pile, is that it? I think the best answer is to not play with a bunch of drunks, but still I must know when a hand is really considered over.

this is kind of an interesting issue and it would be good to know the answer to this as I too sometimes play with some inebriated people and this could happen with us while we are playing so would be nice to be able to resolve something like this immediately and hopefully the drunks would remember for next time lol....

The only advice I can give you here is what the rules state on most Poker games.

"Cards thrown into the muck may be ruled dead. However, a hand that is clearly identifiable may be retrieved and ruled live at management’s discretion if doing so is in the best interest of the game. We will make an extra effort to rule a hand retrievable if it was folded as a result of incorrect information given to the player. Cards thrown into another player’s hand are dead, whether they are face up or facedown".

To start with, the dealer should never declare somebody the winner.

The winner of a hand is the person with the best declared hand (assuming that his cards support his declaration).

If I have a straight flush, and you have a full house, you are the winner if I don't notice that my flush is straight and only declare the flush. Yes, somebody else can point it out to me (but no one, especially you, is obligated to do so). I can also change my declaration -- but only until the point that you have mixed what is in the pot with your own money. After that, it is too late.
