Growing up in my family, holidays, birthdays, etc. always started with dinner and ended with card games. Perhaps it was due to spending a vast majority of my childhood with my Grandparents...
I'll post a few games here periodically. Perhaps you'll have heard of them and played them - if not maybe something new to give a try :D
CUCKOO The cuckoo bird is a glutton that invades the nests of others and generally causes chaos. This game is a little like that :D. Up to 20 can play, but it's the most fun with 6 to 8 players.
Requirements A standard deck of 52 playing cards (Aces rank low) Three chips, coins or tokens required per player
HOW TO PLAY The Object of Cuckoo is to not get caught with the lowest card.
A dealer is selected (however you chose to decide) and he deals 1 card to each player (including himself).
The person to the dealer's left begins the game. He can do one of two things: – Call "Stand" and keep the card he was dealt – Call "Change" and exchange his card with the player to his left
So, if player A calls "Change", player B must exchange cards with them unless it is a King. He must show the King which automatically freezes player A who now must "Stand" whether he likes it or not.
Player B can now choose to stand or change, though it would be foolish to do so in the above example as the King is the highest card in the game. Player C now has the two choices and so one the game proceeds in a clockwise manner around the table.
Note: If you pass on a Ace, 2 or 3, you must do it with the card face up, displaying the value to the other players. All other cards should be kept face down.
Once the play gets back to the dealer he is also is allowed the same two choices, Stand or Change. If he chooses to Change he then must cut the remaining cards and exchange his card for the top card of the cut. The cruel rule in this part of the game is that if the cut card pulled is a King he automatically loses the round.
Once the dealer is done, all players reveal their cards and the player holding the lowest card they must put a chip, coin or token into the pot. Should it be a tie, all players must contribute to the pot.
The game continues until all but one of the players has lost all their chips. The remaining player gets to claim all the chips in the pot.
Cheers, Sky
